1984 Study Guide
George Orwells 1984 is such an influential novel that you neednt have read it to notice its effect. With its chilling examination of totalitarian regimes, 1984 changed the language we use to discuss those very regimes. Popular terms like Big Brother, Orwellian, or Newspeak were all originated by Orwell in 1984. The novel was Orwellââ¬â¢s attempt to highlight what he saw as an existential threat posed by authoritarian leaders like Joseph Stalin. It remains a vital commentary on the techniques of brutal totalitarian regimes and only becomes more prescient and applicable as technology catches up with its nightmarish vision. Fast Facts: 1984 Author: George OrwellPublisher: Secker and WarburgYear Published: 1949Genre: Science fictionType of Work: NovelOriginal Language: EnglishThemes: Totalitarianism, destruction of the self, control of informationCharacters: Winston Smith, Julia, Oââ¬â¢Brien, Syme, Mr. CharringtonNotable Adaptations: A film adaptation released in 1984 starred John Hurt as Winston and Richard Burton, in his last role, as Oââ¬â¢Brien.Fun Fact: Because of his socialist politics and connections to the Communist Party, Orwell himself was under government surveillance for years. Plot Summary Winston Smith lives in what is known as Airstrip One, formerly Britain, a province of a large nation-state known as Oceania. Posters everywhere declare BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, and Thought Police could be anywhere, watching for signs of Thoughtcrime. Smith works at the Ministry of Truth changing historical texts to match the current propaganda being distributed by the government. Winston longs to rebel, but confines his rebellion to keeping a forbidden journal, which he writes in a corner of his apartment hidden from the two-way television screen on his wall. At work, Winston meets a woman named Julia and begins a forbidden love affair, meeting her in a room he rents above a shop in the midst of the non-party population, known as proles. At work, Winston suspects that his superior, a man named Oââ¬â¢Brien, is involved with a resistance movement called The Brotherhood, led by a mysterious man named Emmanuel Goldstein. Winstonââ¬â¢s suspicions are confirmed when Oââ¬â¢Brien invites him and Julia to join The Brotherhood, but this turns out to be a ruse and the pair are arrested. Winston is brutally tortured. He slowly gives up all outward resistance, but preserves what he believes is an inner core of his true self symbolized by his feelings for Julia. In the end he is confronted by his worst fear, a terror of rats, and betrays Julia by begging his torturers to do it to her instead. Broken, Winston is returned to public life a true believer. Major Characters Winston Smith. A 39-year old man who works for the Ministry of Truth. Winston romanticizes the lives of the non-Party proles and indulges in daydreams in which they rise up and spark a revolution. Winston rebels in his private thoughts and in small actions that seem relatively safe, like his journal-keeping. His torture and destruction at the end of the novel is tragic because of the sheer lack of necessity; Winston was being manipulated from the very beginning and never posed any true threat. Julia. Similarly to Winston, Julia is outwardly a dutiful Party member, but inwardly seeks to rebel. Unlike Winston, Juliaââ¬â¢s motivations for rebellion stem from her own desires; she wishes to pursue pleasure and leisure. Oââ¬â¢Brien. Literally everything the reader is told about Oââ¬â¢Brien in the first half of the story is revealed to be untrue. He is Winstonââ¬â¢s superior at the Ministry of Truth, but he is also a member of the Thought Police. Oââ¬â¢Brien therefore represents the Party perfectly: He is changeable as needed, weaponizes information or the lack of it, and ultimately serves solely to perpetuate power and snuff out resistance of any kind. Syme. A colleague of Winstonââ¬â¢s, working on a Newspeak dictionary. Winston perceives Symeââ¬â¢s intelligence and predicts that he will disappear as a result of it, a prediction that quickly comes true. Mr. Charrington. A kindly old man who helps Winston rebel, and is later revealed as a member of the Thought Police. Major Themes Totalitarianism. Orwell argues that in a one-party political state where all other parties are outlawed, perpetuation of power becomes the sole purpose of the State. Towards this end, a totalitarian state will restrict freedom increasingly until the only freedom that remains is freedom of private thoughtââ¬âand the State will then attempt to restrict this as well. Control of Information. Orwell argues in the novel that the lack of access to information and the corruption of information makes meaningful resistance to the Party impossible. Orwell foresaw the rise of fake news decades before it was named. Destruction of the Self. The ultimate goal of all totalitarian regimes in Orwellââ¬â¢s opinion. Only by replacing individual desires with a template created by the State can true control be asserted. Literary Style Orwell writes in plain, largely unadorned language and a neutral tone, which evokes the crushing despair and dullness of Winstonââ¬â¢s existence. He also ties the point of view tightly to Winston, forcing the reader to accept what Winston tells them much as Winston accepts what he is told, all of which is ultimately revealed as a lie. Explore the style, themes, and more with discussion questions. About the Author Born in 1903 in India, George Orwell was an incredibly influential writer, best-known for his novels Animal Farm and 1984, as well as essays on various topics covering politics, history, and social justice. Many of the concepts Orwell introduced in his writing have become part of pop culture, such as the phrase Big Brother is Watching You and the use of the descriptor Orwellian to indicate an oppressive surveillance state.

Letter to Parents for Child Care Free Essays
Dear Parents and Guardians, I would like to start off by welcoming you in to our preschool program. The importance of this letter is to get you involved into the planning of activities the children will be doing and explaining the importance of how play impacts your childââ¬â¢s development. Play is the seed of learning in this age group. We will write a custom essay sample on Letter to Parents for Child Care or any similar topic only for you Order Now Between three years old to about seven years old children should be allowed to play most of their day uninterrupted due to the way the child is interacting with the activity they are doing. While your child is playing they are learning to over come many obstacles in their life what you might not see. The child at play is learning to work in groups with other children and getting along. They learn to share and respect each other. Playing is the highest level of learning a child can do, like writing is for adolescents. Take the children playing in the dramatic play area and playing restaurant, they are learning to listen to what each other wants as they ask for it. They are learning to share the food being made in the kitchen, and well was ââ¬Å"eatingâ⬠the food. They learn to listen by paying for their food and learning to wait their turn. They have to wait to be served as well as for their food. At the sensory table that children are playing with moon sand this week, only about four to about 5 children at a time can play there. They learn to take turns with the toys that are with the moon sand, as well as timings due to having to take turns with other children that would like to play in that same area but there just isnââ¬â¢t enough room. As teachers, teen teachers, babysitters, and parents we can learn so much from watching children play. You learn about the whole child and how you can assist that child. You can see what the child might need help in. If the child has problems talking with other children, you now know you need to work on that childââ¬â¢s speech. A child that doesnââ¬â¢t want to share now you know that they child isnââ¬â¢t around a lot of other children most of the time. You can learn everything about a child by just watching them play. You learn about where they come from by the way they interact with others, if they have other children in the family, and you learn how creative the child is. This helps teachers and assistances to much. This helps gage where the children are at developmentally and what areas they need to work on. Allowing children to play most of the day, they learn to problem solve, take turns, share, listen, interact with others and let out energy in a positive way. A child learns so much through play and there day would be arranged around the time they get to play. The child has a sense of control of what is going on in their life when they are at play. Playing shouldnââ¬â¢t be directed by parents or teachers. The time for the childââ¬â¢s imagination to rome free and learning to take place. Claiming Health in Food Products â⬠Free Samples to Students
Question: Discuss about the Claiming Health in Food Products. Answer: Introduction Businesses operate in a dynamic environment which makes change inevitable. The change affects the performance of the retail business to some extent because the firm has to change how it carries out its operations. The performance due to the various factors contributing to the change can either improve or decline. Performance in businesses is measured using various metrics which include sales volume, profit, customer acquisition, market share, employee retention and employee satisfaction (Bai, Sarkis, 2014). There is the need to identify the factors affecting the performance of the retail business in New Zealand and Fenton Quality produce was used to help identify the factors. Fenton Quality Produce Ltd is a fruit and vegetable shop located in Rotorua in New Zealand. The company was started by Nick Patel after realizing that most the people in Rotorua had been buying fresh greens and that demand for fresh fruits and vegetables was very high because people had embraced healthy eating habits. The company buys the supplies from suppliers in Tauranga, Hamilton, and Auckland. The company engages in both wholesale and retail operations, and it has played a major role in satisfying the needs of the customers in terms of fresh fruits and vegetables in Rotorua and its neighboring locations. Problem identification/opportunity Organizations make profits and losses, but they usually do not know the cause of the change in performance. The lack of the knowledge prevents the companies from sustaining their success (Anderson, et al.2014). This leads to loss of market share, customers shifting their loyalty to the products of the other organizations, increased employee turnover which disrupts the operations of the business due to the shortage of employees to perform various tasks in the organization. This leads to increased costs such as opportunity loss due to the shortage of produce in the market. Retail businesses play a critical role in the economy and also ensuring that customers receive the needed products of the right quality and quantity. In respect of the mentioned issues, the research will be aimed at identifying the factors affecting the performance of retail businesses in New Zealand. Retail businesses especially those engaging in fresh fruits and vegetable play a critical role in the economy and improving the health of many consumers. Due to their importance in the society, their need to identify the factors that affect their performance. Identification of the factors will enable the businesses to operate effectively and efficiently as they will be aware of the measures they are supposed to take at different stages of the operations. Identification of the problem will also enable the business to come up with solutions that will prevent the organization from making losses and this will lead to improved profits and performance of the business. Therefore, I find the area relevant in carrying out the study of the factors affecting retail business performance. The study focuses on the performance of retail businesses in New Zealand with the point of reference being Fenton Quality Produce limited. The scope will be limited to the factors affecting the performance of retail businesses and be able to come up with the main factor that affects the performance of Fenton Quality Produce. Many types of research have been conducted by various authors and scholars to identify the factors that affect business entities in various countries. Each scholar usually has his/her opinion. The opinions sometimes are in agreement but also the opinions sometimes conflict especially where the authors use retail businesses in different industries (Pantano, 2014). This study is interested in exploring the work of authors who focused their studies on the factors affecting the retail businesses especially the fresh fruits and vegetables. The major concepts and studies under consideration in identifying the factors affecting the performance of retail businesses include the management theories, the marketing theories, the industry of the retail business, competition and health factors. Management theories. The management of the business plays a very critical role in the performance of the business. The management of the organization can propel the organization to a greater success or even cripple the business. Employing the right management style will motivate the staff and lead to greater performance. Right management will be able to come up with SMART organizational goals which will give the retail business a sense of direction (Huarng, Ribeiro-Soriano, 2014). The goals of the business should also be communicated well to avoid conflicting goals which may prevent good performance. The performance of the retail business will be improved if the management clearly communicates the goals of the organization as the employees will be aware of the tasks they are supposed to accomplish and achieving the targets will motivate them. The participative management style enables the manager to consider the output of the stakeholders before making decisions. The opinions of the employees are valued and this makes them feel satisfied and work hard to accomplish the goals of the organization which they helped to set (Dozier, Grunig, Grunig, 2013). Affiliate management style enables the manager to create a harmonious environment which will make the employee have the conducive working environment needed to be productive. This kind of management style ensures that the organization is not faced with conflicts between the managers and the employees (Chen, et al.2012). This kind of style motivates and makes employees happy. This enables the organization to achieve its target goals because the employees are satisfied. Directive management style ensures the employees comply with the set rules and regulations. This gives employees no time to put their creativity and innovative abilities to use because the management does not allow so. The employees feel threatened, and they are punished when they make a mistake or fail to meet their targets (Hashim, 2013). This kind of management style can be very effective in situations where deviations from the set plan are risky. The directive style can also be effective in situations of crisis in the organization. The policies made by the leader should be followed. However, the style does not create a conducive environment for employees to be productive and this will cause the business not to be efficient and effective in its performance. Marketing theory. Marketing refers to the companys activities of buying and selling products. Marketing mix refers to the factors used by a firm to influence consumers to purchase a certain product (Gordon, 2012). Most organizations use the popularly known 4P's of the marketing mix. This comprises of the price of the product, promotion, place and the product itself. Price refers to the set consideration the company is willing to accept in exchange for its products. The price should be set by considering various aspects which include the income of the target market and the behavior of the consumers (Singh, 2012). The retail business tends to lower their selling prices to sell more and I completely agree with this statement. The retail business sells more if the product has a high price elasticity and lowering the price will attract more customers. The business should also offer their customers price discounts to attract more customers. The price should reflect the value of the product being sold by the business and this will attract more customers leading to the success of the retail business. Setting high prices will scare consumers unless the business is selling Veblen goods. The product refers to the goods and services offered by the business. The business should ensure that its products are of high quality to attract more customers. The business should also sell products that satisfy the needs and preferences of the customers (Singh, 2013). Like in our case, the Fenton Quality Produce limited sells fresh fruits and vegetables which are needed by the consumers, and this enables it to sell more and be successful. Offering consumers inferior goods will result to low sells as customers prefer high quality products. Place in the marketing mix refers to where the goods and services can be purchased. The business should ensure that the business is strategically placed to create convenience to the consumers willing to buy the products (Gordon, 2012).The products of the business should be easily accessible, and this is ensured by having effective supply chain management in the organization which will ensure that the goods are readily available when needed by the customers. If the goods are not accessible, few goods will be purchased, and the business performance will decline. The last P is for promotion. This refers to the activities the organization engages in to ensure that the buyers recognize the products of the business. The business should engage in sales promotion, public relations, and advertisements. The promotion enables the business to highlight the strengths of the business and why consumers should purchase the products. The advertisements include television advertisements, print media, and radio commercials. The business can also engage in social media advertising which has been very effective for many businesses (Chaffey, Smith, Smith, 2013). Word of mouth also helps the business products to be recognized as satisfied buyers will refer other buyers to the products of the organization, and this enables the firm to perform better. Poor advertisement can damage the reputation of the business and lead to poor performance. The industry of the retail business. The industry of the retail business also plays a critical role in the success of the retail business (Christensen, 2013). Businesses related to agricultural industry are more affected by this factor. For instance, Fenton Quality Produce sells fresh fruits and vegetables. This will force the business to invest a lot in storage facilities to store the perishable products so that they can be in the condition needed by the customers. Failure to provide fresh products will force the customers to seek products from other firms. If the industry is seasonal, the business should determine when to lower their prices because the supply of the products exceed demand. This knowledge will enable the business to prosper. Failure to offer discounts and lower prices will lead the business to perform poorly. This refers to the rivalries between two or more entities. Businesses compete for market share, consumers, profits and even suppliers. The business should ensure that it creates a competitive advantage that will enable it to position its products in a better position than those of the competitors (Bennett, et al.2013). If it does so, it will perform better. If the business does not create competitive advantage, it will be eliminated from the business operations because it will not be able to compete. Businesses selling products which have health benefits tend to sell more than businesses offering products which are said to be hazardous. Nowadays, people have embraced healthy living, and a business selling products which satisfy the needs of the customers tend to perform better as they attract more customers than other firms (Lhteenmki, 2013). Businesses should, therefore, ensure that they offer products with nutritional value so that they can perform better Among several factors discussed in the literature, the industry of the retail business factors is more appropriate to the Fenton Quality Produce Ltd. This is because the company sells perishable products which need a lot of care so that they can be fresh always. Participative management style is more appropriate for the firm because there is need to consult the stakeholders on the best ways to maximize the sales of the company than other management styles. What are the effects of management style on the performance of retail businesses? Does marketing mix affect the performance of retail businesses? Conclusion From the findings of the literature review, management styles play a very critical role in the performance of the retail businesses. The choice of the management style will affect the motivation and the satisfaction of the employees. If the management style motivates the employees like in the case of affiliate and participative management styles, the employees feel valued and motivated and they will help the business achieve its goals as they will perform their tasks effectively. Directive management style will cause the employee to feel uncomfortable as they fear to be punished if they do not achieve their targets. This creates a poor working environment and the employee will not perform their duties well. The business should, therefore, use participative and affiliate management styles to solve management problems that affect the performance of the retail business. The other notable finding is that the management should employ the marketing strategies that will enable its products to be recognized. The firm should know the best times to reduce the prices to attract more customers, the time to offer customers discounts to encourage repeat and bulk purchases. The company should always set the most appropriate selling price to attract more customers and also make a profit. This will help the organization to solve the problems associated with setting the selling price of the products which have a direct influence on the performance of the retail business. The study findings will be useful to all the retail businesses in New Zealand and to potential entrepreneurs who wish to venture into the business of selling fresh fruits and vegetables like Fenton Quality Produce Ltd. The investors will be able to know that their business is affected by weather conditions and it is seasonal so they will have all the knowledge needed so that they can make the right decisions that will help them to prosper. The investors will also know that they should invest more resources in storage facilities because the products of the business are perishable and they require proper storage facilities so that they can be fresh always. Flowers For Algernon And Other Stories Essays - Brill, Algernon
Flowers For Algernon And Other Stories The most obvious contrast between Flowers for Algernon and other short stories, such as "A & P" and "Miss Brill" is the length. But length is not the topic for this short essay. The predominant difference, besides length, is the number of fully realized characters in the story. In "A & P" and "Miss Brill" the only fully developed characters are Sammy in "A & P" and Miss Brill in "Miss Brill." In the short story "A & P" by John Updike, there is a character, Sammy, who is shown experiencing about 15 minutes (maybe less) of life in a market. Besides Sammy, the rest of the people in the story are basically cardboard characters that create conflict for Sammy. The reader never really gets to know the store manager or the girls because they are all looked at through the eyes of Sammy. In a longer story, other characters might have been fleshed out and given more complex and real personalities instead of acting as catalysts for the plot. In the short story "Miss Brill" by Katherine Mansfield, there is a character, Miss Brill who is a completely developed character. The other characters in the story?the people in the park and the two teenagers on the bench next to her?only help to develop Miss Brill further. The reader never knows any of the supporting characters (if they can even be called supporting). Just as in "A & P" they are nothing more than catalysts. In the long short story "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes, Charlie Gordon is, indeed, the main character. In this story however, he is not the only character. The other characters in the story are not just things to move the plot along and develop Charlie as a character, but are full characters themselves. Alice, Charlie's "love interest" cares for Charlie even before the operation. She is conflicted in the way that she wants Charlie to be smarter, but is not so sure of the operation. Her feelings come out pretty obviously in the last scene when Charlie (after his high IQ has dwindled back to where he was, or even less) goes back to class. When she sees him back in the class for people with learning problems, she runs out crying because of what has happened to Charlie. We understand why she does what she does, and also can relate to her feelings and emotions. The difference between stories like "A & P," "Miss Brill," and "Flowers for Algernon" is that short stories present an opportunity to focus on the personality of a single character while longer stories can have a more developed supporting characters. Focusing on only one character does not make a story of any less worth than a story with fifty developed characters. It is just a different style of writing.

Rulers and Reaction Times essays
Rulers and Reaction Times essays The reaction time of ten subjects was measured. The subjects were asked to catch a ruler ten times under five different conditions. The first condition measured the subject's simple reaction time. Each further condition added an additional stimulus and the reaction times were measured. There was a clear increase in reaction time with the addition of further stimulus, however the expected result of a steady increase in response time with the addition of each condition did not occur. The third condition displayed the highest response time where as the final condition displayed the second lowest (after condition 1). Assuming that no design problems in the experiment affected the results, it cannot be concluded that cognitive processes occur in separate order and do not overlap. Given the average reaction time of condition five was lower than condition three, some cognitive adaption may have occurred to lower the response time of the subjects or another reason may exist. One asp ect not covered by the experiment, but important to the results was the error factor. Pre-guessing the experimenter caused a high rate of error, however it lowered the overall results. As the world moves forward with technology, increasing pressure is placed upon humans to be quicker, be smarter and to operate more efficiently. As the population increases systems are being put in place to reduce incidences and accidents occurring. An example of this is a study conducted by Cameron, 1995 examining the influence of specific light colors, motor vehicle braking and the reaction time of the drivers to these specific clouds and conditions to avoid rear end collisions. Donders subtractive method holds that reaction times can be obtained by subtracting the simple reaction time; or subtracting type A from type B etc. (Cameron, 1995). Given this, it stands that the more stimulus provided (or thought processes required), the longer the response time of the subj...

Mills utilitarianism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Mills utilitarianism - Essay Example One thing which we should have learned by now during our philosophical journey is that we have to have a theory of human behavior which should be able to address the diversity of human environments and thus cannot be very simple and rigid. Utilitarianism is a step in that direction. Utilitarianism The founder of Utilitarianism was Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832). His theory begins with proposition that nature has placed human beings under two masters: pleasure and pain. Anything that seems good must either be directly pleasurable, or thought to be a means to pleasure or to the avoidance of pain. Conversely, anything that seems bad must either be directly painful, or thought to be a means to pain or to the deprivation of pleasure. From this Bentham argued that the words right and wrong can only be meaningful if they are used in accordance with the Utilitarian principle, so that whatever increases the net surplus of pleasure over pain is right and whatever decreases it is wrong. Moreover, the net pain and pleasure to be considered is not restricted to personal level but should be the sum of the pleasure of all involved by acting or getting effected by a particular action. Therefore from utilitarianism we cannot gauge the utility of action by putting it on the persona l criteria of pleasure and pain but it has to be more wholesome resultantly more complex but practicable. Basic Objections to Utilitarianism Most difficult part in the implementation of Bentham's utilitarianism is that to take an action, one has to take into account the expanse of the effects of the actions i.e. how far the consequences going to travel. This factor leads to three basic objections to utilitarianism:- 1. Utilitarianism is too demanding as it is more inclined towards collective good than individual good. 2. Utilitarianism is a heartless doctrine as it does not concentrate/focus on the intention but on the consequences thus making the entire concept of virtuous intent redundant. 3. The Principle of Utility is impractical because one has to think the consequences for which the time and information might not be available at a particular moment. Mill's Modification to Utilitarianism These basic objections though seem valid were addressed by John Stuart Mill (1806-1873). The salient points of his modification to utilitarianism were:- 1. Introduction of Higher and Lower Pleasure Mill is of the opinion that pleasure has to be distributed into categories of higher and lower pleasure. At times we may confront a situation that we find a number of actions which might lead to "pleasure". In such circumstances we would be at a loss to decide the course of action. It will be only the conception of higher and lower pleasure which will give us the ability to take correct actions at correct time. In doing so we should also consider that the most suitably equipped person to judge the distinction between the higher and lower pleasure is the one who has experienced both. 2. Introduction of Rules in Moral Decision Making Mill considers that rules can be the force behind the decision. These rules are in fact the outcome of utilitarianism and they are established by taking into consideration principles of utility i.e. rules which had been giving and will give "pleasure" to the

Home work assignment - Essay Example The authors establish why the alibi in Bancroftââ¬â¢s favour could well be the basis to suspect him. The truth, especially with regard to history, is bound to be vague, because even the best historical detection has more to do with probabilities than with certainties. 1 I am convinced that Sackââ¬â¢s method of investigation works better with Susan Hamelin / Hamilton than the one used by the two journalists who interviewed her. This is because Sackââ¬â¢s method is primarily based on building rapport at first with the person with whom he wishes to interact. This, to a great extent, prevents the possibility of the person being interviewed hiding or distorting facts. 2 Even as a group, Sackââ¬â¢s personalistic method is to be preferred to the historiansââ¬â¢ method, because the latter, with their impersonal attitude, tend to regard the person being interviewed as an object of study whereas in Sackââ¬â¢s method, the person being interviewed will be touched by the apparent genuineness of the interviewerââ¬â¢s concern. This creates the platform for an honest exchange of ideas and information. If Sackââ¬â¢s method yields good results with people who are challenged, it is quite reasonable to believe that the method will work much better with people who are sane and fit. 3 If I were to pick a patient from ââ¬ËAn Anthropologist on Marsââ¬â¢, I would choose Temple Grandin.
